Can I use photos and scans from eXegesis at my site?
Generally speaking, the answer is yes. Here are the guidelines. They apply to eXegesis ONLY, not the affiliated sites (the ones linked down the left hand side) like the Ratcave or the Harem. Those sites have different rules and you definitely need to ask me.
1. You MUST NOT be a commercial site. I am sick of my work being used for profit (Celebrity Babes, etc, this means you). Please note, this does not include fan-run sites subsidised by online stores - I'm talking about online news sites and mass-produced celebrity image archives. If you're making money from your site, pay an image licensing bureau. Keystone Canada have good rates for online usage.
2. You must upload the image to your site. No direct linking.
3. Certain websites have blanket permissions for certain classes of images. That means they don't have to ask every time.
4. There will be times when the wording on the page will override these guidelines. I might say, "I manipulated this image so please credit if you use it" - that means you can use it but I definitely want a credit for it. Or I might say, "This image is not to be used offsite" - that means you can't use it. If I ever say something like that, please, do as I ask. There's usually a really good reason - like, someone might get into trouble for giving it to me, or I've promised another site the exclusive for whatever reason, or whatever. I've been burned sharing exclusive material before and I don't want that to happen again.
5. If it's Mulder and Scully, it's yours. eXegesis sites do not focus on either of these characters, and it makes sense that sites that do should benefit so that the images can be shown to the people who will enjoy them the most. The following sites already have blanket permissions to harvest whole collections of Mulder/Scully/DD/GA images: Duchovny.Net, GADDarchives, GAWS, the Haven, Road Runners. Generally speaking, I'm quite happy for anyone to take them. All I ask is a credit and link. You don't need to tell me.
6. If it's production and crew, the following sites and webmasters have blanket permissions: October, 13th, Chris Carter File, Carter & Crew, All Thing Chris Carter. Others, please ask.
7. If it's Nick Lea (Krycek), Laurie Holden (Marita), Mimi Rogers (Diana), or Annabeth Gish (Reyes), please ask. I have websites for these performers and I want to maintain some exclusive content. Simply Annabeth has blanket consent for all Annabeth photos.
8. If it's Robert Patrick, Mitch Pileggi, or Chris Owens, please ask. I really like these guys and I want them promoted, but there are places I may want to offer them first.
9. If it's another supporting player, like James Picken Jr, Jerry Hardin, William B Davis, Rebecca Toolan, Cary Elwes, etc, it's yours for the price of a credit and link, no need to ask. Again, I like these guys, I want to see them promoted, and it makes sense that the pictures should be where they'll be seen.
10. If you want to start a new website for a supporting performer/character, drop me a line. If the actor doesn't have much of a web presence already, I'm happy to raid my collection for media to get you started. I'd love to see an up-to-date Chris Owens site, for instance, or William B Davis.
11. Artwork is a separate matter to straight scans. Artwork should never be used offsite without permission.
I'm trying not to be too precious about images. The truth is, very few images fan webmasters use are ours, in any basic intellectual property sense. Where some claim to credit comes in is when we buy items to scan, and put in the work of scanning them, and put up the webspace to host them and all of that. So I've tried to give permissions for as many cases as I can while still maintaining the appeal of this site (which is its up-to-date, less-widely-reported news about the supporting cast). That's why the rules for Mulder and Scully, who are not very significant to this site, are a lot more lax than the rules about images of the supporting performers. So there is method in my madness, as the saying goes, and I'd appreciate your help in respecting these guidelines.
