Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - TENTH ANNIVERSARY UPDATE!
|
Well, I've been hard at work on XFVCU for the last few weeks, so I'm behind in general news. I'll put up a general update on fandom and performer happenings on the weekend. But most importantly, today is the tenth anniversary of the first episode of the X Files pilot! Happy anniversary, philes!
XFVCU: As you know, XFVCU is in part to mark the tenth anniversary, so the pilot episode is released today. Midnight In The Firing Line is by yours truly, and it introduces the X Files staff in their new formations, and the new mythology as well. See it here. Thanks to Linzee for the cover art, as well!
Literatti: My fiction site has had an overhaul, with heaps of new thematic collections, large-print and archive-friendly versions of more recent stories, and more! Take a look! And while you're there, take a look at my recent Knowle/Shannon stories, Don't Stop Swaying and Evolution, as well! Finally, if you have any interior links to my fiction site (ie, anything other than fiction.deslea.com), they will have changed, so please take a look and make sure they're correct. Many thanks.
Lucy Meets Mitch: Lucy Lawless (Shannon) will join Mitch Pileggi (Skinner) on the Warner Bros series Tarzan. She has been cast as his sister and adversary, witty newspaper publisher Kathleen Clayton. Many thanks to Gail at Periodically Lawless for the heads-up.
Australian Philes: EzyDVD has a sale on XF DVD seasons 1-6 for under AU$80. This is a fabulous price. Pre-order now for delivery after September 24. (No, they're not paying me for saying so!) They also have Season 7 available for pre-order, though not at that price, natch. Get the details at EzyDVD.
I am aware that this update is missing several news items from the last few weeks, among them the recent passing of David Duchovny's father. I will do a fuller update on the weekend.

Tuesday, August 12, 2003 - THE MYSTERIOUS PROJECT UNVEILED!
|
I've been saying for a couple of months that I was keeping quiet because I was working on something, haven't I? You should know by now that that's a very dangerous thing. *grin* Well, I can now unveil the mysterious new project. *drumroll*
XFVCU: X Files: VCU is a new virtual series. XFVCU will begin with a pilot episode coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the show's premiere. An ongoing series will follow. It's set eighteen months on from The Truth, and the X Files agents are together again with a new agenda, and the same old interpersonal woes. I'm really excited! Thanks to my many partners in crime. Get the details here. There's a video trailer, as well!
New Videos: I've updated my video site with a fantastic Yves/Jimmy music video by Vesper. I've also added the XFVCU trailer and a remastered version of my 2001 Krycek/Marita music video Gravity Of Love. The trailer and Gravity have been selected to be screened at the vidder's convention Vividcon later this month, in Nearly New and Special Effects, respectively. Colour me excited! See the videos here. NOTE: Gravity won't be up til later today. If the link fails, just try again later.
Literatti: I've put up a short Knowle/Shannon piece, Act Of Contrition. It's a missing scene from Eschaton, and it can stand alone for content, but you might need to take the characterisation on faith if you haven't read the novella. It's Shannon's take on the life they were forced to live.
XFilesMusic: Many of you reported being saddened by the disappearance of xfilesmusic.com from the web when their domain was poached by a porn site. Well, the site is up and running again at a new URL - see it here. Good to see you guys again!
Interesting Article: There's a very cool article about the source of the X Files' popularity in Skeptical Enquirer - see the online version here. Thanks Marlene for the heads up!
Feeling The Foxley Love: Maidenjedi has written a fantastic essay in her journal about the appeal of Mulder/Diana as a pairing. She's given me permission to link to it, so go take a look at it here.
Spotzy On The Move: Alfornos tells us that XF writer/exec Frank Spotnitz will head up a remake of the 1983 thriller The Star Chamber. Spotnitz will direct as well as produce - his first full-length feature as a director. The movie deals with vigilante justice in the criminal law system. Congratulations, Frank, and thanks as always to Alfornos.
Merchandise Alert: Merchandise hounds, the X Files Fan Club is still active, and coming up with new promotions every month. They have collector DVD sets and new T-shirts on the agenda for the coming month (it isn't clear if the DVDs will be the normal season sets, or some kind of special edition). The club gave a lot of behind-the-scenes support to Thank You Annabeth, so be sure to take a look.
Aussie Philes: Australian Philes, lots of great news! The Lone Gunmen will be repeated on Tuesdays at midnight starting tonight. The pilot episode will be omitted (presumably due to its unfortunate similarities to 9/11) and the series will commence with Bond, Jimmy Bond. Also, the Season 7 DVDs will be released in Australia on September 24. Finally, EzyDVD is selling Fight The Future on special for AU$16.50.
Annabeth In The White House: This has already been widely reported while I've been working on XFVCU, but for the sake of completeness, I'll mention that Annabeth Gish (Reyes) has been cast as the President's eldest daughter on The West Wing. As always, tune in to All Things Annabeth for the latest in Annabeth news. Annabeth has also answered more questions for visitors at ATA - take a look! Thanks to everyone who let me know.
Melinda McGraw: The August 1 edition of Entertainment Weekly had a feature about a day in the life of Hollywood, and among the featured moments was none other than Melinda McGraw (Melissa Scully). She was trying out for a role on Everwood. No word as to whether she got the part, but the casting director liked her! Thanks to Lara Means.
Art Contest: Stargate siren Amanda Tapping, who XF fans will know as Carina Sayles in Avatar, is the subject of a new art contest for fans to demonstrate their appreciation. There will be prizes, and the results will be presented to Amanda in France in November. Get the details here. Let's show those Stargate types that we had her first! *wink* Thanks to Azar.
Yet Another Stargate: Stargate is fast becoming XF Alumni Central. Aside from Amanda and Adam Baldwin (Knowle), it seems that Stephen Williams (X) recently reprised his role there of General Vidrine in the episode Enemy Mine. (He had previously appeared in 2000 and 2001 in the same role). Should we start taking bets on who's next?
Invisigoth Rises Again: Kristin Lehman (right), who played Esther Nairn (Invisigoth) in Kill Switch, will co-star in a futuristic drama, Century City on CBS later this year. The series revolves around a law firm in 2065. Thanks to Deanie.
Site Troubleshooting: The sites are having a few upheavals this week. Our host Gertiebeth has been upgrading her servers, and several sites were affected. The Ratcave was down for a few days, as was the old Nick Lea image gallery, but those are fixed now. Thank You Chris Carter was also affected, but I've rescued the guestbook and moved it to a subdirectory of Thank You Annabeth; please update your links. Most of the problems are now solved, but there are a few problems still with the Mimi Rogers Fanlisting (at Mimi Magic) and ImageCentral, my image gallery back-end. Those will be unpredictable while I troubleshoot. Thanks for your patience, and a special thanks to Gertie for her help.
Ratcave Banner Exchange: While going round the participating sites to advise them of a URL change necessitated by the upgrade, I've realised that only one site still displays the banner exchange code. So I'm pulling the plug on the banner exchange. I'll be writing to that person this week and gradually pulling the banners off my own pages. Sorry to see it go.
Email note: I've been on a mass email catchup this week. I'm down to a two-year record low of 133! I still have a bit to wade through, though, and I know I owe some betas. If I owe you anything, please forgive me! I'll be in touch soon.
